Alan Young is Vice
President, Emerging Technology for Citigroup. The Emerging Technology
unit was re-created in August 2004 as part of Citigroup’s Strategic
Technology Plan. The unit is developing a process to identify and
evaluate new technologies that could potentially provide Citigroup’s
business units with opportunities to increase revenues, enhance competitiveness
and/or reduce costs. Mr. Young is responsible for ensuring that Citigroup’s
Global Technology Council (made up of the major business sectors’
CIOs) understands how these new technologies could help their businesses,
and for identifying possible company wide efficiencies through the
uniform deployment of these technologies.
From September 2003 to August 2004, Mr. Young was head of Citigroup's
Information Security Services group with responsibility for developing
and managing the overall Information Security Program, including developing
programs for training and awareness, risk assessment, security incident
response management and providing subject matter expertise in information
security regulatory and technology matters to the businesses.
Prior to this, Mr. Young was the Vice President and Executive Director
of Technology for e-Citi. In that capacity, Mr. Young managed the
e-Citi team that also identified and evaluated new technologies on
behalf of Citigroup. He and his team established common technology
initiatives and standards across all Citigroup Internet businesses
in an effort to maximize the flexibility of each unit while facilitating
cross-selling and other transactions. He was also the architect of
Citigroup’s remote electronic distribution strategy via mobile
telephones, personal digital assistants, interactive television and
other access devices. Mr. Young joined Citigroup in March 1998.
Prior to joining Citigroup, Mr. Young worked for Viacom, where he
was responsible for executing the media company’s worldwide
satellite distribution strategy. He oversaw the implementation of
several digital television distribution systems in Europe, the Middle
East, Asia and the United States. Earlier, Mr. Young worked as a Technical
Manager for MTV Europe and was responsible for developing MTV Europe's
satellite distribution strategy. Mr. Young negotiated several satellite
capacity contracts and in 1994 specified and implemented MTV Europe's
first digital compression system based upon the emerging DVB standard.
Mr. Young began his career as a technical manager at British Telecom.
He graduated from the University of York with a Master's Degree in
Engineering and is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
